We moved into this early Victorian house in Camden, London, two days before Christmas, eight years ago. This is the back of the sitting room: there’s a more formal seating area too. Large rooms with windows on both sides can feel chilly, so I’ve painted it a warm pink so that even if it’s a grotty day and I want to go straight back to bed it’s inviting in here. It gets me revved up to write. I have a maximalist approach to decoration: that is, there are lots of objects and books – but it probably looks messier than it is, everything has a place. I don’t seek stuff out, but I like junk shops and I often end up coming home with something. I don’t really have collections of things, though – that way madness lies! I tend to write my articles during the day and my books at night. I thought about having a room devoted to work, but I like the companionship of being in the centre of things – it lessens the blow. If I’m on a crazy deadline, the children know to stay clear.

I think a lot about middle-aged women online. They can be uniquely vulnerable. Young and youngish women grew up with the internet and can broadly navigate it and look after themselves. Parents of much younger girls are aware of its dark corners and can adjust access accordingly. But a small subsection of the middle-aged and early elderly find that none of this stuff comes naturally.
The computer is, to them, like mysterious dark magic.

There is no one that this book isn’t for. I can’t believe it’s a first novel. But as he optimistically looks to a future that is wildly different from the one he imagined, his life turns upside-down as his ex-wife, Rachel, suddenly disappears. While Toby tries to find out what happened – juggling work, kids and his new, app-assisted sexual popularity – his tidy narrative of a spurned husband is his sole consolation.
But if he ever wants to really understand where Rachel went and what really happened to his marriage, he is going to have to consider that he might not have seen it all that clearly in the first place. Utterly blistering. It has depth, wit, nuance and life. Brodesser-Akner’s sharp and tender-hearted debut centers on hapless year-old New York hepatologist Toby Fleishman, recently separated from his driven wife, Rachel, and alternately surprised and semidisgusted to find his dating apps “crawling with women who wanted him,” who prove it by sending him all manner of lewd pictures.
After an increasingly rocky year marriage, Toby has asked Rachel, who owns a talent agency and makes a lot more money than he does, for a divorce, because she is always angry and pays little attention to their two preteen kids. But then, as Toby is juggling new girlfriends, dying patients, and unhappy children, Rachel disappears, leaving Toby to cope with logistics more complicated than he anticipated. The novel is narrated by Toby’s old college friend Libby a device that’s occasionally awkward , a former magazine journalist now bored with life as a housewife in New Jersey.
Though both she and the novel are largely entrenched on Toby’s side, Libby does eventually provide a welcome glimpse into Rachel’s point of view. While novels about Manhattan marriages and divorces are hardly a scarce commodity, the characters in this one are complex and well-drawn, and the author’s incisive sense of humor and keen observations of Upper West Side life sustain the momentum.

Hundreds of Twitter users took vow of silence on the site yesterday after historian Mary Beard was the latest in a long line of women threatened with abuse on the social networking site. India Knight, Lauren Laverne and Duncan Bannatyne were among the high profile names taking part in a boycott on Twitter yesterday to protest against a series of threats made to female users of the site. Scotland Yard has now reevaled that its e-crime unit is looking into claims of abuse by eight people.
Caroline received rape threats from fake Twitter accounts after she campaigned for Jane Austen to be the first female woman of heritage to feature on the ten pound note, though she chose not to take part in the Twitter debate supposedly launched in her honour. Mary Beard was the subject of further headlines when she was threatened with tweets by a user who claimed to have placed a bomb outside her home. Tony Wang, Twitter UK general manager, publicly apologised for the suffering of female users in true Twitter style, by posting his character reaction on Saturday evening.
There is more we can and will be doing to protect our users against abuse. That is our commitment. Tony expalined that the company is testing ways to simplify the report button in the form of apps. We want to know what you think of the boycott. How should Twitter deal with trolling?

Begins as a hilarious, fast-paced tale of a middle-aged Manhattan man navigating fast sex culture of dating apps, ends as a gut-punch feminist text – Dolly Alderton, author of Everything I Know About Love Here is a portrait of modern love and marriage that is blisteringly funny, wincingly painful, and – ultimately – both heartbreaking and humane.
Fleishman Is in Trouble reminds me of the great novels of the s and s – just the sort of thing that Philip Roth or John Updike might have produced in their prime except, of course, that the author understands women. Taffy Brodesser-Akner can write the pants off any novelist out there. Fleishman Is In Trouble
Marooned in a sprawling farmhouse in Norfolk, teenage Linda Radlett feels herself destined for greater things. She longs for love, but how will she ever find it? She can’t even get a signal on her mobile phone. Linda’s strict, former rock star father terrifies any potential suitors away, while her bohemian mother, wafting around in silver jewellery, answers Linda’s urgent questions about love with upsettingly vivid allusions to animal husbandry. Eventually Linda does find her way out from the bosom of her deeply eccentric extended family, and moves to London to become a model.
She knows she doesn’t want to marry ‘a man who looks like a pudding’, as her good and dull sister Louisa has done, and marries the flashy, handsome son of a UKIP peer instead.
